Ottawa, ON – C’est Bon Cooking will once again offer week-long Teen Chef cooking classes this summer in its ByWard Market kitchen location on Dalhousie St. for children aged 12 to 17.
There will be 4 weeks offered in total - two in July and two in August. The camps have been popular for a number of years, but this year they’ll get an added twist to help young, budding chefs understand the entire food production process.
“This year, we’re adding a market tour component to the week-long camps,” says co-owner and Marketing Manager Stefanie Siska. “We really want kids to understand not only how to prepare their own food, but also see where it comes from, how to buy it fresh from local producers, and even how to store it. We want them to understand what a precious gift food really is.”
Co-owner and Chef Georges Laurier also emphasizes that it’s important to teach the next generation to feel confident in the kitchen: “Today’s parents struggle with the challenges of mealtime from what to serve to how to prepare it. As a chef, it’s my goal to pass on my skills to others and in this case, give teens the cooking skills and confidence in the kitchen they’ll use for the rest of their lives.”
The camps will consist of five, four-hour days during which teens will get hands-on training on everything from mise-en-place, to knife skills, to table service. They will prepare their own lunch every day and cover fundamentals in poultry & eggs, meats, vegetables & rice, fish, and desserts.
Class space is limited to 8 students at a time. Register for classes via C’est Bon Cooking’s website at www.cestboncooking.ca/cooking-school, or by calling C’est Bon Cooking at 613.772.8687.
